Japan’s Defense Changes Status

Japan's Self Defense Agencies will likely be raised to the status of Ministry.

What difference that makes it that the Defense forces will be able to have a say in budgeting and policymaking instead of just getting what is tossed their way.

Another bill will make peacekeeping, disaster relief and international cooperation essential duties rather than subordinate ones.

Japan has a war-renouncing pacificist Constitution. Its defense agency has been restricted since 1954. Any changes in that status has met with very stiff opposition, until now.

Nobody wants to see Japan's military attempt what it could not achieve in the first half of last century. Nobody.

I am surprised that there isn't more international uproar with regard to this change.

What do you think?
